THE CADAVER SYNOD: ROME 897

Pope Stephen orders dead body of his predecessor, Pope Formosos, dug up and put on trial for various offences.

A person talked on behalf of the corpse of Pope Formosos during trial.

Formosos was found guilty and "justice" was carried out.  His body was mutilated and thrown into the Tiber River.
