CLASSICAL MUSIC AND WORLD POLITICS

(UNDER CONSTRUCTION - NOT IN FINAL FORM)

Music is the most politically powerful of all the arts because it connects most directly with the subconscious mind. Spengler observed that music is the ultimate culmination of western civilization. With the development of the organ and the orchestra, western society developed the power of music to a level not achieved by any other civilization.  Here are some relevant links to classical music.

WAGNER

My baton will yet become the scepter of the future. Richard Wagner

Wagner's operas represent a truly incredible artistic achievement in terms of a translation of mythological ideas into the world of art. However, his operas are hard for most Americans to watch in light of their foreign language and length. However, many of Wagner's orchestral pieces are very popular in America. They are:

Overtures: Meistersinger, Rienzi, Tannhauser
Orchestral Highlights: Ring

BEETHOVEN

Beethoven could be considered the father of modern music. It is in the music of Beethoven as in the painting of David that we see the transition from classicism to romanticism in western art.

Symphony Number 3. This is one of the turning points in western art. It is dedicated to Napoleon, a man who transformed world politics forever and set in motion political models that will shape the coming new millenium.

Symphonies Number 5 and 9. These also represent powerful expressions of political power in history.
