PREVENTING WORLD WAR IN SYRIA

AN INTERNATIONAL CHEMICAL WEAPONS

MONITORING TASK FORCE IS NEEDED

On April 13th, 2018, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump made a decision to launch a missile strike against Syria in the name of protecting Syria against chemical weapons from Assad, just like he did in 2017.

Russia and America came closer to war than at any time since the Cuban missile crisis.

The problem is that reliable information about chemical weapons is anything but clear in Syria.

Donald Trump was urged to review the evidence and launch a thorough investigation before deciding to strike Syria. Much of the "evidence" that was reviewed relied largely on video clips and photos. Contradictory indications exist given that the video and images of victims in the locations purportedly affected by chemical weapons came from rebel-affiliated entities known as the “Douma Revolution” and the “White Helmets” while Russian military units which later got physical access to the supposed sites and Syrian Red Crescent personnel working in the area reportedly found no indication of a chemical weapon attack. A major question is what motive would the Syrian government have for making a chemical weapons attack on its own civilian population, especially at a time when it has growing popular support and is having increased military success? Why would it risk Western ire? Is it more likely that the supposed chlorine gas attacks in Douma may have been carefully constructed propaganda? (Common Dreams)

A former weapon's inspector, Åke Sellström, has said the following:

The attack may have come from Assad’s regime, but you may as well have other explanations. Toxic substances can be dispersed in many ways, for example through explosions or smoke.  There are many poisonous substances in circulation during the battle. (Common Dreams)

On April 12, even US Secretary of Defense James Mattis told the House Armed Services Committee that the US government does not have any evidence that sarin or chlorine was used, that he was still looking for evidence.

The truth is that a greater investigation was needed. Launching missiles first and asking questions later is not the answer. It is time for some sanity in the U.S. approach to Syria and Russia before it's too late.

We are glad the April 13th missile strikes were not as lethal as they could have been. But we believe there are other ways to deter the Syrian regime from using chemical weapons. Russia and America need to work together to figure out what is going on.

What we suggest is the creation of an international chemical weapons monitoring task force in Syria to investigate and prevent chemical weapons attacks in the future, so there is no need for missile strikes. This could be done with coordination between the U.S. and Russia.

With America and Russia there are going to be differences, but that doesn't mean there needs to be war. And this is a war the planet will not survive.
