RACING TOWARDS NUCLEAR WAR

THE DANGEROUS INSANITY OF THE U.S. PULLING OUT OF THE

INTERMEDIATE-RANGE NUCLEAR FORCES (INF) TREATY

The recent U.S. decision to pull out of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty reduces warning times for nuclear war in Europe from 40 minutes to 10 minutes or less.

This creates huge incentives to launch on a supposed warning, rather than a confirmation of an attack.

A particularly troubling aspect of this is that the launch tubes for the supposed US ABM site in Poland could also be used for cruise missile attacks against Russia.

By directly threatening Russia with a nuclear surprise attack Trump puts pressure on  Russia to directly threaten America with nuclear missiles off its coasts.

Even worse Trump is starting a whole new nuclear arms race.   China is certain to feel threatened too and they too shall escalate their nuclear arsenal.

The 1987 INF Treaty eliminated all of the two nations' ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers, their launchers and associated support structures and support equipment within three years after the Treaty went into force. By May 1991, the nations had eliminated 2,692 missiles, followed by 10 years of on-site verification inspections. So this was a major success. A success that pushed both nations further away from the prospect of nuclear war.

However, on February 2nd, 2019, the U.S. announced a decision that was see as a move of total insanity. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the United States would suspend its obligations under the (INF) Treaty. Speaking on February 1, Pompeo said Washington will formally notify Moscow that the United States is withdrawing from the INF Treaty in six months. (RFERL). Soon after the U.S. made this announcement, Russia decided that it would pull out of the treaty in six months as well. (Reuters)

ONE STEP CLOSER TO DOOMSDAY

William Perry, former Secretary of Defense under President Bill Clinton, helped unveil the 2019 iteration of the Doomsday Clock. According to him, the decision to pull the United States out of the INF will make the world less safe than it was a year before this happened. (Truthdig).

This pushes the world closer towards the prospect of nuclear war.

There are those who say a nuclear war between the United States and Russia would never happen. That Russia would never strike the United States, because that would surely mean their own destruction.

But we shouldn't be so sure.  Will the Russians retaliate if we box them into a corner? Putin himself has said several times that they would.

For the interest of U.S. national security, along with global security, we strongly urge the President to reconsider this decision and to rejoin the INF Treaty.

AS A RESULT OF THIS MOVE, GERMANY BEGINS TO QUESTION DECADES OLD AGREEMENT TO HOLD U.S. WEAPONS

For the first time since the 1980s, there is debate about the presence of U.S. nuclear weapons in Germany.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling partners are reconsidering their support for a decade's old arrangement that puts Germany under the U.S. nuclear shield. This is a development that further adds to the country's growing tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The center-left Social Democrats, or SPD, have created a commission to re-evaluate their position on strategic, foreign and security policy, including the merits of "nuclear sharing." Nuclear sharing is a Cold War era agreement under which German warplanes would be used to launch U.S. nuclear weapons in the case of a Russian attack on Europe. (Wall Street Journal, 2-12-19).

According to SPD officials, these deliberations came partly as a result of Donald Trump's withdrawl from a treaty with Russia that regulates the presence of nuclear missiles in Europe.

Ms. Merkel's party is continuing to back the U.S. German agreement. However, a decision by its junior coalition partner to oppose nuclear sharing would be momentous, and put into question Germany's membership in NATO, which it has been a part of since 1955.
